R.I.P. Gil Scott-Heron

The godfather of rap and the creator of revolutionary rap died a few days ago. May he rest in peace.

Introducing the World to OFWGKTA

Tyler, the Creator. I think there's a lot of things to describe Tyler. Apart from his intense vulgar language and obscene content, Tyler, the Creator is probably one of the most creative artist to come into the rap industry and I can say that with great confidence. I'm not going to give a biography but Im going to explain him better than most people can. Tyler, the Creator consists of 4 elements: Tyler, the Creator, Ace the Creator, Wolf Haley, and Tron Cat. Tyler, the Creator raps, Ace the Creator makes beats and videos, Wolf Haley is his evil white alter ego and Tron Cat is the voice inside Tyler's head that causes him to act violently. With Tyler, the Creator's many sides he has created two albums Bastard and Goblin in which he basically reveals what goes on in his head. All of his many sides appear on the two albums where he talks to his therapist Dr. TC (Tyler's conscious) about his many problems. With the many ideas that go along with the Tyler, the Creator, it's safe to say that he is one of the more unique rappers to ever step forward. And did I mention that he's only 19...

Introducing the World to OFWGKTA

My favorite member by far is Earl Sweatshirt. At the age of 17 he is considered the best lyricist in the group and has been compared to Nas at 17. He is currently not making music right now because he is at a military academy in Samoa but will be back making music when he is 18. His mom has forbidden any music of his to be leaked.

Introducing the World to OFWGKTA

Haven't posted in a while but I want to start a new category where I post about my favorite rap group to date. I've been following them for a while so I'm just going to give their best stuff one post at a time. Here I give to you Domo Genesis.

It Just Don't Stop, Push Up Ya Lighter, No Alibi--The Roots

I explored The Roots a little bit more over the weekend and downloaded a few of their albums. Damn! Illadelph Halflife is a sick album, not to mention Organix (and Phrenology has a few good songs). Anyway, here are three of my favorites from Illadelph Halflife and if you like these downloading the album would be worth it. The whole album is sick, so there are a bunch of other good songs on there too. What They Do (a song I have been listening to long before I downloaded the whole album but is amazing), Clones, and Concerto of the Desperado are also classic.

The List Part 2 (plus Brain--Jungle Brothers)

I know the Roots, De La Soul, and the Alchemist aren't exactly unheard of, but I'm only familiar with a few of their songs. I definitely need to do check out more of their songs. I added Jungle Brothers because I heard a song by them today and I liked their style. Here's the song:

The List
1. Pacific Division
2. The Roots
3. De La Soul
4. Jungle Brothers
5. The Alchemist

Cutting Room Floor--Prodigy of Mobb Deep

A smooth roller from Prodigy with Alchemist on the beat. Enjoy, shout out to Kai on his birthday.

The List Part 1

I am starting a new thing called "The List," where I write down some rap artists that I am not too familiar with but want to look into more. As I listen to more and more music and find new artists, I will add them to this list. The first group that I plan to check out more is Pacific Division. Pac Div is a California rap group that's new on the scene (at least I think they are), but I've heard a couple of their songs and they have an old school feel to them. So, here is where The List starts:

Rob & Vic--Onyx

A dark song from Onyx, a hardcore group that was slept on in the 90's. They have some raw stuff, I would recommend checking them out. Last Dayz and Most Def are some other good tracks. Enjoy

Heavenly Divine--Jedi Mind Tricks

Jedi Mind Tricks is a sick group that uses a lot of classical music samples in their beats. They have a hardcore flow that is full of religious allusions, and they are all fascinated by violence. This song is one of their more mellow tracks, but it's tight nonetheless. Enjoy.

1nce Again--ATCQ

Just another great joint from the one and only Tribe Called Quest. Enjoy

InI--Center of Attention

It's been a while since I've posted. This track has a chilled tone with a sick flow. I can't stop listening to this one, ever since Kai told me to get the album (I would also recommend getting it, it's called "Center of Attention" as well). I.N.I (composed of Rob-O, Grap Luva, I Love H.I.M., Marco Polo, and DJ Boodakhan) has smooth flows, and their songs are perfect with Pete Rock's producing. Enjoy this tune, and get the album.

Julian's Suggestion

MF DOOM and Madlib form to be Madvillain and they bring this great song to us.

De La Soul, Poor Righteous Teachers, and Akrobatik

It's been a while since I posted, but here are three great tracks to listen to. I'm not gonna go into too much detail about them because they speak for themselves. Enjoy:

Julian's Suggestion

Another underrated, undiscovered rapper who luckily hasn't reached mainstream because if he did he wouldn't
produce great music like this. Enjoy

Julian's Suggestion

I don't think there's anything to say about this song. Outkast is simply amazing in this song.

2Pac - Dear Mama

Pac isn't dead, just press play.

Julian's Suggestion

One of the more underrated, undiscovered, and unrecognized song to this day. Camp Lo and their "Coolie High" along with didn't receive the recognition that they deserved. With one of the hottest beats that emerged in the 90's, Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede emerged in the game with what was a hit. From New York and both of Muslim decent, didn't deserve the credit for this song that they deserved. Enjoy

Julian's Suggestion

Although the album has received mixed reviews, The Ecstatic my Mos Def ultimately gave us this great, mellow song.
Along with Slick Rick Mos Def gives us a feel that resembles his days with Blackstar. Enjoy

Searching - 5 Elementz

Henry's post of Searching by Cl Smooth reminded me of this great track of the same name. Beat by Dilla, and (not surprisingly) it's amazing.

Essentials, Volume 3

For the third volume of Essentials, I want to share The Main Ingredient by Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth. This album is full of smooth beats with nice sampling. I am not an expert on Pete Rock or C.L. Smooth, but both emcees have nice and consistent flows throughout the album. My favorite two songs are "Searching" and "The Main Ingredient." Other good songs are "All the Places" and "Carmel City." I would definitely recommending copping this album one way or another, a relaxing collection to listen to.

Freestyle Fellowship--When the Sun Took a Day Off and the Moon Stood Still

Although the title may not be the best, this song has got a nice beat with some nice flows from the Freestyle Fellowship. I am not to familiar with the group, but this song is definitely a good one to bump.

Westside Connection--Do You Like Criminals

Here is a track from Westside Connection that has a classic West Coast G-Funk synthesizer beat. A nice one from the Bow Down album to bump your head to, enjoy.

Julian's Suggestion

"Above The Clouds."
"Above the clouds, above the crowds, where the sounds are original, infinite skills create miracles."
In a way this is Gangstar's gift to the original OG's. Enjoy

2 Tracks from Black Star

Two amazing must-have tracks from Mos Def and Talib Kweli aka Black Star. Both songs are off the album "Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star," and both are beautifully crafted songs where both emcees have smooth and meaningful flows.
